I was born Nailah Mosley on July 22nd 1992 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of three, my parents felt that Brownsville was not the safest place to raise my brother and me, so we moved to a house in Far Rockaway, Queens. Although we had moved, Brooklyn remained my home away from home. As a child I was brought up in the apostolic church, hence my belief in God. I was always very athletic and a firm believer in education. I sang on the junior choir in church and most of my aunts, uncles and cousins were singers in the church as well. But it wasn’t until I was about ten years old that I realized I could do more than just sing on a choir. Around this time I had gotten into poetry. One of the spoken word poems I had written sounded like a rap when read aloud, my interest in it grew even stronger.

My excitement exploded and I fervently started rhyming and writing! I instantly assumed a new persona and dubbed myself, NY-ONE! Shortly after I discovered this new talent of mine, my family began noticing it as well. One day I rapped for my father and he seemed impressed. He then told his business partner and co founder of No Joke Records, Ron Flemming, that I had caught his ear. They then gave me some tracks to listen and write to. A few months later I was in the studio with their then up and coming artist, Kayla Bliss, getting my first taste of the music industry. I featured on a few of Kayla’s songs and eventually recorded some of my own with noted producer, Brent Toussaint. I was around 13 years old and still focused predominately on my education. My aspirations to become a musician naturally had to take a back seat, until I was old enough to handle the pressures of being a student and an artist.

There are many people in the industry today who have inspired me to pursue a musical career, some of them being Mos Def, The Roots, Drake, The Notorious B.I.G,  J.Cole,  Kid Cudi, Busta Rhymes, Slaughterhouse, Timbaland, and Missy Elliott. All of these artists, in some way shape or form have inspired me to continue to write, especially knowing that many of them came from the same place that I’m from and they’ve all been where I’m at.

NY-ONE is back and raging to go!  Hip-Hop world, here I come!  In five years I see myself finishing college and entering a new stage of artistry. I see myself continuing to grow as a writer, as well as a performer and becoming a well known name in the industry.  In the future I know I’ll be working with some of the artist I listed above and overcoming challenges I thought I’d be too afraid to face. My goal is to one day soon, change the basis of Hip Hop’s foundation by getting rid of the hidden subliminal messages and gimmicks that currently plague the industry.
