Kayla was born Ekela Dixon, in Brooklyn, NY and spent many nights listening to her parent’s musical collection of artists, such as Roberta Flack, Anita Baker and Steele Pulse. She spent some of her formative years in Jamaica, which contributed to her love for reggae music. To emphasize and further develop her musical talents, her parents enrolled her in the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. There she learned musical techniques and styles that contribute to her eclectic musical personality. Her years in the program were critical to her development as an artist.

Writing comes easy for Kayla and this has become her means of expression. Long after her days with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Kayla has written many songs for herself and other artists, some established and many others not quite established. Kayla, through her collaboration with her label, No Joke Records, released her DEBUT album called Roads to Bliss. All the songs on the album were written by her, thus producing a true blend of reggae, R&B, jazz, and classical ballads.

Kayla is currently in the studio working on her sophomore album; which promises to open up new doors and take the world by storm. In between albums she has performed at Madison Square Garden in the company of great reggae contributors like Buju Banton, Barrington Levy and Super Cat. Kayla also performed on the Retro Jam Show along side R&B and Hip-Hop greats Keith Sweat, Bobby Brown, KRS-ONE, and the legendary Rakim at Madison Square Garden. Be on the lookout for Kayla as she continues to integrate her music and perform with R&B artists and Jazz musicians, just to name a few.

Kayla has recently participated in an open mic contest which was hosted by Shaila and Lenny Green of 98.7 Kiss FM. She wowed everyone in attendance with her rendition of Bonnie Rait’s song ‘Can’t Make You Love Me’. She won the contest singing acapella and showing her vocal range. Kayla was featured on the Michael Baisden show (98.7 Kiss FM) on the B-Side segment on May 8, 2009, for her song ‘If I Want It’. The B-Side segment is an opportunity for artists to get their music heard by listening audience for their approval. The listening audience called in requesting to ‘Rock It’, which means keep playing Kayla’s song.
